

Recently he placed 2nd in a competition in Des Moines. When one of his fellow school buddies, Norman Bettis, died in Vietnam, he very seldom missed the opportunity to place flowers on Norman’s grave. Gary was never in the military, but he was a true patriot, never missed an election and proudly displayed our country’s flag. The Black Swamp Arts Festival is an all-volunteer fine arts and music festival and opportunities abound for people who want to give back to their community and have fun at the same time. He went on and graduated from Elon University in Elon, NC, in 1973, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in history.
